Sonic Advance X is a 3D Action Platformer fangame for the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Dr. Eggman has returned with yet another scheme to take over the world. However, this time he aims to conquer the world across every dimension. It’s up to Sonic, Blaze, and their friends to put an end to the doctors most dangerous plan yet.

This is a personal project that I’ve been working on ever since 2019 in Unity3D C#. I’ve programmed a 3D physics-based platforming framework, UI, state machines for the player and enemy AI, designed and implemented all 2D assets and some 3D assets. The two videos above show off recent developments.

Character/Enemy/Object assets used in earlier screenshots/videos belong to SEGA and Sonic Team.

Level(s) shown in in some screenshots/videos belong to another fangame, Sonic Robo Blast 2.

The overall visual style for the game has changed throughout development, going from a realistic yet cartoony style to a more vibrant anime-y style inspired by Yuji Uekawa’s art style.
Below are screenshots from various builds through development. The first two images are from earlier builds, while the last two are from more recent versions of the project. The UI underwent many changes as well to match the overall aesthetics of the game. Adobe Photoshop was used to create all of the 2D assets.

This video showcases the current implementation of the Gameplay UI in action. The ring in the top left corner spins based on how fast the player is currently going. When collecting certain collectibles, icons indicating how many you’ve collected will appear in the top right corner of the screen. Since the main focus of this game is to get through a level as fast as you can, this information is normally hidden to avoid cluttering up the screen too much.

Alongside the UI, I also designed the logo for this project using Adobe Photoshop.
Below are the project’s logos. The left most one being the oldest, and the right most one being the current.
Earlier versions of the logo used the title ‘Sonic (Project) Advanced’ as I hadn’t decided on a final name for the project. The first one was a bit too busy. As such I reeled back the background elements, opting to use them to represent a key part of the game. The second one focusing more on the aspect of the Warp Rings, the main form of transportation between the levels and dimensions. This was the logo used from 2021-2023 until a final name was decided one, Sonic Advance X. With this logo we chose to reel back things more, going for a much simpler and more defined look while still referencing an important aspect of the game- the X-Zone. Some people had trouble reading the X in the first attempt due to it being slanted and partially hiding behind the text. We pushed the X further to the right and gave it a clearer shape. Many felt it was still missing something which then lead to the stylization of the top left corner, as well as sparkles throughout to represent each of the main characters in the story.

I also created 3D models for all of the characters and enemies as a result of the visual change. Below you can view the 3D models for Sonic and Tails, as well as some renders I took of them in engine.
All models were created in Blender, and textured in Adobe Photoshop.
